Life’s Essential Guide: A Review of ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ and Its Timeless Lessons

Tuesdays with Morrie is the #1 international bestseller. It’s one of the best non-fiction books I’ve come across.

Written by Mitch Albom, a student of Morrie Schwartz, a sociology professor at Brandeis University in Massachusetts. This book was written in the last 6 months of Mitch’s life (each Tuesday for 6 months was a steal deal for Mitch to converse with Morrie), during which he spent most of his time in bed due to a harrowing disease known as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing muscle control loss. If you’re still curious about this disease, it’s the one that infected our famous physician Stephen Hawking.

Morrie was a human being like us, but his reaction to his extremely difficult situation was uncanny, making him the subject of a book worthy of selling millions of copies and stealing millions of hearts. Morrie’s perspective on life has been both simple and profound, average yet rich, not just at the time of his death, but throughout his life.

Every Tuesday, Mitch would go to Morrie to talk about the true and deeper meaning of life. They discussed death, regrets, family, money, marriage, culture, forgiveness, and the world with utmost lucidity.

Personally, this book has knocked my soul all over. Each line was heartfelt. I could relate to Morrie on a very deep level. He was a caring individual who enjoyed spending time with others. This book made me laugh, cry, and sob; it gave me goosebumps, cold shivers, fear, and a sense of limitless love. This book conveys warmth and affection in the same way that a fatherly conversation would. I do not want to let go of this book, and I never will. A book that deserves a thousand reads.

See, this is the beauty and magic of an authentic, passionate, unpretentious, and well-crafted book put forward. It ignites the soul and transforms one’s way of life. In fact, many publishers were interested in this book even before Morrie’s death, and the advance money from the publishers helped Morrie pay his massive medical expenses. He aspired to leave an indelible mark on the world through his life experiences and wisdom. And it’s no surprise that he was obviously wise enough to spend his final hours doing so, especially with a book, because he knew that a book is a frozen imprint of one’s mind and heart.

I’d like to share some of the most beautiful contemplations that Morrie and Mitch’s conversation rescripted and brought back to mind for me. Number one: never procrastinate or take things for granted; you never know if this is your last breath. It made me appreciate my life far more than I ever did. Second, no ego or attitude has ever provided anything to anyone. Love and compassion provide an incomparable sense of serenity and surrealism. Most importantly, no one is bad. There is an unknown, mysterious reason for any human being to act contrary to societal norms. They are hungry for love. Before passing judgment and jumping to conclusions, try to love the other person, and understand and respect his or her past. Like you, he or she is struggling to untangle the complexities of the human brain in this simple world.

Last but not least, this book provides ample opportunity for introspection and reflection. A book that I would keep forever. I would definitely revisit this book, but only if allowed to.

Now, I don’t want to reveal the book’s top secrets. You can get your own copy and experience Morrie’s ease, modesty, purity, and plainness in a far more heartwarming way than I did. It is currently one of my favorites. It could be the same or a different experience for you, which I would love to hear about in the comments if you are willing to share it with me.

Lots of love and good wishes your way! Happy reading.
